Close to Varzob

It is widely known as a small geographic area close to Dushanbe in the basin of the Varzob River, crossing the central part of the southern slopes of the Hisor range. There are juniper, walnut, maple, apple, cherry plum, and hawthorn trees, and shrubby arboreal vegetation. There is a fairly deep round pool here filled with ice-cold water, a fine spray from the waterfall and a current powerful enough to send one sprawling.

Shirkent

Shirkent is a delightful mix of unique flora and fauna, geological objects, red sandstone and historic charm.

Location – Tursunzoda District. About 60km west of Dushanbe.
Shirkent valley which is famous for the historical-natural park “Shirkent” is not far
from the town of Tursunzoda, preserves the area’s unique flora and fauna,
ecosystems and natural and cultural structures as well as for the careful study of the
South-West Hisor area.
Natural and historical monuments in the Shirkent River valley are of great
scientific and recreational importance and, together with the scenic landscapes,
from the main content of the historical-natural park. The most significant
geological objects are three sites of dinosaur footprints from various eras
containing more than 400 footprints. The first location with the footprints of these
giant, ancient reptiles is located in one of the right tributaries of the Shirkent River,
slightly above a village with the same name. Two lines of pterodactyl footprints
are seen here on the surface of erinaceous limestone.
This whole mountain structure, formed out of red sandstone, is decorated with
groves and individual dark-green juniper trees. Stone Age and Middle Ages
monuments such as the sites of primitive peoples, ancient mining of copper and
copper-tin ores, cemeteries, and irrigation facilities are interesting archaeological
sights in this valley.
Interesting ethnographic objects, localized mainly in Pashmi Kuhna village,
demonstrate some of the cultural and religious traditions of the present-day
the population of the Shirkent River valley.

Qaratag

Qaratag Valley

The valley is famous for its diverse scenic nature and rich vegetation with a noteworthy grove frequented by nightingales and on the mountainside an abundance of wild grapes, apple, mulberry, cherry and plum trees.

Qaratag Valley begins approximately 8km from Shahrinav near a highway, along the right bank of the Qaratag River. Qaratag village in ancient times was a centre of silk-weaving production. Bright and colourful locally produced silks, famous for their quality, were in big demand in Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey’s markets.
Payron and Timur-Dara lakes are situated among wooded slopes with bright-blue water and one of its shores is covered with coarse-grained granite sand which make an excellent beach.
Qaratag Valley is a wonderful place for one- or two-day hikes. Footpaths and horse paths ending near the glacier zone are wide and safe enough; the climate is mild, and there are suitable places for stops or overnight stays. There are many interesting routes of all levels of complexity which are best travelled between May and November.

Varzob

Varzob Valley — the route to Zarafshon Valley and Khujand city, is located on the magnificent Hisor mountain range with views of peaks of 4,000-5,000 metres. At weekends certain spots, particularly around the Varzob Lake, are unique for having a picnic and walking even a few kilometres up into the surrounding hills will guarantee you peace and quiet.

The pretty Gusgarf Waterfall is a vertical waterfall torrent crashing down 30m from the rock above and in late spring the route is further enhanced with a carpet of blood-red tulips. Gusgarf Falls is a particularly beautiful spot in spring when the flowers are in bloom.
A short walk from the main road brings you to the Siama Gorge, where the crystal blue waters rush steeply downhill from glaciers and through thickets of birch trees and fruit bushes before joining the Varzob below.
There is a fairly deep round pool here filled with ice-cold water, a fine spray from the waterfall and a current powerful enough to send one sprawling. Apart from the Gusgarf Waterfall the valleys of Siyoma, Ojuk, Kondara, Maikhura and Takob Rivers flowing into the Varzob River are also very popular. The unique beauty of these valleys is amazing. The slopes of the Ojuk Valley, stretching dozens of kilometres deep into the mountains to the north-east of Varzob, are covered with vines. There are also apple, cherry, and plum trees, but the main attraction in this valley is the numerous sycamores, known by the local population as Chanor. The climate here is mild. The river has many ponds in which it is very pleasant to swim, and sandy beaches where you can sunbathe. Moving up along the valley it is possible to get to the Simiganj (Golden Treasure) village which is famous for its grapes.
Some of the highlights are:
— Simply being in the mountains, similar to the Pamirs, enjoying the fresh air, the stunning views and a chance to see some traditional villages, including somewhere the people speak the ancient Sogdian language.
— Following the course of a clean, fast flowing river, with many Choikhona, restaurants and small parks along the banks.
— The chance to go on walks of anything from two hours to three days in dramatic scenery, and likely to be the only outsider there.

Hisor

Hisor – the town with 4200 years’ history. You want to know what the reality says about Tajikistan, Hisor Fortress tell you. The basements of the Fortress with 4,200 years’ history were found in 2017

Dushanbe City

Modern Dushanbe ironically is an ancient city with great historical

heritage and at the same time it is rather young (it is 90 years old).

Dushanbe is the political, economic, cultural and administrative centre – the capital of Tajikistan, modern and brimming with lush green vegetation. Dushanbe (until 1961 was called Stalinabad) is located in the centre of the Gissar valley at an altitude of more than 800 meters above the sea level. From the North and East, it is surrounded by foothills, crowned with snow-white caps of the Gissar range. The Gissar range reaches from both sides of Varzob River (within the boundaries of the city called Dushanbe). There are some 120 glaciers in the upper part of the Varzob river basin creating a favorable microclimate in the mountain gorges and in outskirts of Dushanbe. The Varzob River generously grants drinking water and irrigates neighboring orchards and fields. And the picturesque mountain gorge offers a place for recreation and a comfortable base where guests from all parts of the world come to explore and relax.
Due to the closeness of the mountains, the inhabitants of the capital can feel a light breeze and evening freshness in the hot periods of the summers. There is a distinctly continental climate in Dushanbe with arid and hot summers and humid cool winters. The most beautiful time of year is the warm and dry autumn – time for harvesting.
The true age of Dushanbe is subject to scientific arguments as numerous discoveries of archaeologists, ethnographers and historians found buried treasures of Sasanid silver coins, wedge-shaped copper axes of the 2nd century B.C., skilfully made earrings from alloyed gold and silver, bronze and gold-plated detail of horse harness with relief image of a head of Greek god Dionysus), give evidence that almost 2500 years ago this place was inhabited by people who lived in a relatively highly developed culture of handicrafts and city buildings.
